A West African man (Isaach de Bankolé) has an ugly confrontation with policemen in the Stuttgart subway. Thank God for Harry Potter and hobbits and time travel and terrifying stories set in a distant future that has nothing to do with us. (If only we knew ourselves.) Some big films have been moved to 2002, in hopes that times will be better or, as we say wistfully every day, ''back to normal.'' A few serious, possibly Oscar-worthy pictures will open over the next two months, but the sure thing this season is fantasy. HOLLYWOOD would love to know what America wants to see at the movies this holiday season.
